The writer will be chosen depending on the relevant theme proposed.
It must be a topic related to a specific language or linguistic area
(e.g. language policy and planning in nineteenth-century Spain; dialect contact and the
emergence of Norwegian Nynorsk; multilingualism in Britain after the Norman invasion), or
focus on specific methodological and/or theoretical constructs (e.g. a critical appraisal of the
concept of prestige in historical sociolinguistics; a discussion of the apparent time construct v.
change in real time from a historical sociolinguistic perspective; an overview of the study of
language maintenance and shift in historical settings).
The paper will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
CONTENT:
1. Relevance of selected case and/or topic
2. Overview of relevant secondary literature
3. Critical reflection and analysis
4. Use of sufficient and appropriate examples
FORM:
5. Appropriate use of academic English and sociolinguistic terminology
6. Structure and logical presentation of arguments
7. References and bibliography
